The worst ever experienced by my colleagues.
The worst since the one in Kobe in 1990.
And personally the worst one I’ve ever experienced. That’s really scary, but you feel safer on the 2nd floor on a building than on the 30th floor of a huge tower.

In Tokyo, its strength has been close to 5, enough to make people go below their desks and wait for the earthquake to finish.
I’ve been really impressed by the calm kept by my colleagues, hoping everyone else is OK.
Another impression is how fast this news has been spread to the world.
Just few seconds after the earthquake began, it was possible to find on the net thousands of tweets or updates of Facebook status

Here is the map of the earthquake.
Its center is localized on the east of Sendai in Miyagi prefecture, for a deepness of 10 kms.

Here is the map showing the risk of tsunami.
In Tokyo, the waves may reach 1~2 meters. In Miyagi, there is a possiblity of 6 meters.

In red are risks of waves more than 3 meters.
In orange, risks of waves of 2 meters.
In yellow, risks of waves of 1 meters.

As far, there has been a Tsunami of 10m in Sendai. This is huge!

There have been a couple of replicas, and another earthquake of strength 6 has happened in Ibaraki 30 minutes later.
This is definitely a scary experience, let’s hope this is not going to happen again.

Ichiran is a Ramen chain restaurant from Fukuoka, in Kyushu island, created in 1993. They have a lot of restaurants through Japan, from popular places, such as Roppongi or Tokyo Dome, to more countryside places in Kyushu island, like Nakasu-kawabata (中洲川端駅) in Fukuoka prefecture. There is also a shop in Nagoya but all of the restaurants are located in Kyushu and Kanto areas.

Ichiran KanjisThe Japanese characters 一蘭 mean in direct translation 一 for one and 蘭 for the name of a plant. This chain of restaurants has made in 2009 around $60,000,000 (45,000,000 euros) of sales and a branch has also been created in America, called Ichiran USA Inc.
This place has quickly become famous in Japan thanks to its unique way of serving meals for the Japanese customer.
For people who generally like discretion and private space while eating, this restaurant is particularly adapted. Everything is made for the customer to have no eye-contact with both restaurant staff and other customers. If you don’t like being watched by others or if you are ashamed because you can’t eat cleanly, this place is made for you!

Ichiran machineImmediately after entering in the restaurant, to be honest there is nothing special. You can find a normal automatic machine that sells meal tickets. It is after buying your ticket that this restaurant surprises because you will receive from the staff a paper that looks like a questionnaire (available also in English). In a Japanese Ramen restaurant, when you order a cup of Ramen, it is always made the same way for all the customers. Here you have the possibility to customize your Ramen to make it at your taste! It is possible to choose in your Ramen the quantity of Green or Red onions, the quantity of spices, if you want you Ramen to be hard or soft, and also if you want the soup to be concentrated or diluted. For each one, there are 4 or five different levels, so the customer has a lot of possibilities to to customize his meal. It makes participating while appreciating the meal. It is one of the things that make this shop really unique.

Seats at IchiranAfter deciding your customized Ramen, you have unfortunately to queue a little bit. This chain of restaurant being victim of its success, you barely see it empty. And by waiting you will easily notice an electronic panel on a wall in front of you. This panel shows the list of seats available in the restaurant. Not only that but also you can identify people who just began eating or people who just received their orders. There are also sensors on each seat, such as when someone leaves his seat, it is immediately noticeable by the stuff, and if the customer has finished eating, the seat will be written as 空 (empty) on the electronic panel. It makes things easily for customers queuing, because you have just to go to the empty seat when you want to eat. Or at least waiting for a group of close seats if you are not alone, however this place is not really recommendable for dates in couple or as a family restaurant. This seat system is under a patent, what is understandable to avoid such a strange system to be stolen by concurrent restaurants.

Some customersArriving at your seat, you will have for your own commodity a private space where you will be able to eat without being seen from the staff or even. Take care not to leave your seat or to stand up without letting a notice to the staff that you are still eating! There is a sensor on the seat so if you stand up restaurant waiter will immediately know that nobody is seating there, and they could authorize other customers to come take your place. There is for that a small notice called “leaving for a short moment” (一時離席) that you can use. This system of private seat is a little bit disorientating at the beginning, but it is really convenient to not to have to care about others around. To order, push the red button in front of you and a couple of seconds later, a waiter is taking your questionnaire and your meal tickets. It takes a couple of minutes to receive you meal, this time depends on the hardness of your Ramen.

Then it is time to eat! And to be honest, not only the soup is delicious, you have the impression to eat a complete meal with that. If your stomach is not fully satisfied, you can still order some supplement by choosing the extra order you want on the chopstick’s wrapping paper and to push once again the red button in front of you.

The first time, eating is such a place is really surprising. And you know if you immediately like or hate this concept.

Enjoy going there!

東京DOLL、石田衣良. Tokyo doll, novel by Ishida Ira

Tokyo doll coverMG, Master of Game in shorter, is the creator a a famous series of RPG-strategy game called Urban Goddess (Megami-toshi) that have been solved at million of copies through Japan. In this game, Tokyo is divided into several areas. Each area is commanded by a God, and each God has its own vision of life. So basically the player has to choose an area and make his portion of Tokyo grow by fighting with the other Gods. This game have been very successful because it tends to make an exact copy of Tokyo but in the future. Until now, the first three episodes has been really successful, assuring fortune and success to MG and his colleagues and friends. At the beginning of Tokyo Doll, MG is starting to design the fourth episode of the series. In lack of inspiration, he doesn’t know from which point he should begin his work, until he meets a twenty-year old girl called Yori. This girl, whose body has perfect feminine dimensions, is extremely beautiful and it does not let MG insensitive. He decides to hire Yori as a photograph model for the game. She accepts, as it is well paid and with the money earned with this job she will be able to pay the fees to go studying hairdressing. Yori is going to have her image used as one of the Goddesses of Urban Goddess. Then, Yori, by investing more and more time in her model work, begins to have feelings for MG and reciprocally.

Shibuya girls, Kawaiii~The starting plot of Tokyo is nice, a talented game creator in lack of inspiration needs a source of inspiration, preferably young and attractive, who will be the image of his design work. He finds this muse in a convenient store below his apartment building. From the moment of the meeting of Yori and MG, the story really begins… to slow down. In case you want to read this book and that you are allergic to the Shibuya or Harajuku young Japanese girl always saying Kawai-Kawai, just avoid it. Through the character of Yori, this book is full of references to this generation of Japanese girl focusing their attention on fashion and consumerism. Reading the full story will make you notice a lot of cliches returning to the typical Tokyoite girl fashioned teenager. Perhaps wanted like this, it makes the book story heavier than it has to be. The first pages make you think that the game design work of the talented artist looking for inspiration will be the main line of the story plot, but the complicated relation between the model and the artist is the real centre of the scenario. The target public of this book is certainly young in the teenage, and certainly feminine.

A real dollThen, a couple of words about the complicated relationship between Yori and MG. Like a muse present in the story to inspire the artist, who is the only creator in the book, Yori is pure and innocent. MG uses her innocence to abuse of the talents of his model (in all the senses of the terms), in order to achieve his goal of a game design at the image of Yori. The lack of deepness in the character of Yori can be understood as she has to stay at the state of image for the game design. The point of her having some supernatural prediction powers is also a bit too much. This doesn’t help the book to accelerate his rhythm but it makes it easier to read, perhaps because this book is primarily targeted to a young public. In conclusion, if you have an interest in trying to inform you about fashioned Tokyoite turning their mind to consumerism, love stories of an artist with his innocent and beautiful 20-year-old muse, you will perhaps find an interest in this book. In other cases, you should just avoid it.
